“Just in time to make a wonderful husband and/or father very happy Christmas morning is this beautiful frame-off restored, true 138 code SS 396 Chevelle convertible,” the listing states.
This Chevelle was the result of an inside-and-out restoration that reportedly cost more than $100,000 to complete. Its paint finish is called Sapphire Blue Diamond, which the seller states is close to the car’s original hue of Mist Blue. The interior and underbody were given equal attention to detail, and a set of Boyd Coddington wheels on redline tires provide attractive curb appeal.
The Chevelle model first launched in 1964 on the midsized General Motors A-body platform. Its available configurations at the time were many, including coupes, hardtops, convertibles, sedans, and station wagons. The body was restyled in 1966 with modified treatment for the bumpers, grille, and fender lines. By that time, the available Super Sport package was not merely just a trim level but also included upgraded powertrain equipment.
Under the hood, this ’66 convertible draws power from a big-block Turbo Jet 396cid V8 with a period-correct block casting, although the stamp plate is not legible, so the seller is not certain if the motor is numbers-matching. Performance upgrades include an aluminum intake and chrome hardware for the valve covers and the air cleaner. Power is fed to the rear wheels through a three-speed HydraMatic automatic transmission.
Upgraded equipment continues to the inside where the car has been optioned with bucket seats, a padded dash, a console, a tilt steering column, a woodgrain steering wheel, Vintage Air HVAC, and more. Based on the looks of the photos that accompany the listing, this convertible is a turn-key show car.
“This Chevelle convertible performs and drives as good as it looks,” the seller states. “It is ready to show or drive anywhere. Don’t know a single thing this car needs. Come see for yourself.”
The seller is asking $79,800 or best offer for this nicely restored Chevelle SS.
